FAQ

What does Fatto a Mano Travel do?

1

Fatto a Mano Travel plans fully custom, private trips to Italy for couples and families. Every itinerary is built from scratch around the travelers: where you stay, who you meet, what you eat, how you move between places. There are no packages and nothing is pre-built. Fatto a Mano means “made by hand,” and that is how each trip is put together. By directing our clients' time and spending toward master artisans, family-run tables, and small towns, they help sustain the communities, workshops, and traditions that keep Italy handmade, and they're rewarded with a deeper, more authentic experience.

For whom is Fatto a Mano Travel right?

2

Couples and families who want to see Italy the way Italians do and have decided the time on the ground is worth more than the hours spent planning it. Most clients come to us saying they’re, “Overwhelmed,” and need help planning a truly authentic trip. Many have been to Italy once before and want this trip to go deeper.

Does Fatto a Mano Travel plan trips anywhere other than Italy?

3

No. Fatto a Mano Travel plans trips to Italy only. Depth in one country is the whole point. We know the regions, the hotels, the drivers, the guides and the families behind the workshops and vineyards personally, and that is what makes the trips truly authentic. Italy is our passion.

How is this different from booking the trip myself?

4

AI has made information ubiquitous and the result has been that travelers are even more overwhelmed. Search Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini, and you’ll get 3 different responses that likely miss the best spots in Italy. These tools are a regression to the mean, and they produce average trips.

Our clients don’t want to experience the same trip as the masses, they want the trip that requires deep relationships. We have built these relationships across Italy since 2011, and we introduce our clients the the real Italy - one that you can’t access through an AI tool or Google search.

Our clients also tell us that we save them time, mitigate the risk of their travel investments, and help them navigate complex logistical situations they would otherwise have not know now to navigate.

How is this different from a traditional travel agent?

5

A traditional agent sells inventory and earns commission from suppliers, which rewards booking what pays best. They book packaged trips to places they’ve never visited.

Fatto a Mano Travel creates handmade experiences in a country we know intimately. We charge a flat planning fee and work for you, so the recommendation is always the right hotel or experience for your trip, whether or not it pays us anything. We negotiate with vendors on your behalf, handle all logistics, and provide you with concierge level support while you are on your trip in Italy.

Italy is our second home! We speak the language and we introduce you to our friends to create a truly authentic experience.

What is Fatto a Mano Travel’s planning process?

6

  1. Inquiry - You fill out a short form with details relevant to your trip.

  2. Discovery call - We schedule a 30-45-minute conversation to learn about how you travel, your personal interests, where you’ve traveled before, and how you want this trip to feel.

  3. Custom itinerary - You pay a deposit and within a few days we create a fully custom itinerary for you which covers every detail of your trip (flights, accommodation, restaurants, experiences, logistics, etc.)

  4. Review itinerary - We schedule a 1.5 hour call to review your itinerary and make any necessary adjustments before booking.

  5. Booking - We reserve everything and negotiate on your behalf for better rates. We remain available for any needs you may have before your trip.

  6. Final review - One month before your trip, we schedule a 1 hour call to review the trip and ensure every detail is sorted for your arrival.

  7. In Italy - You have a direct line to us throughout the trip. We provide concierge level support during your trip to handle any changes you need to make.

What is included in your service?

7

Everything from the first call to your flight home: custom itinerary design, all reservations, restaurant bookings, private transfers and drivers, guides and experiences, a written trip guide, and support while you are in Italy. You pay one flat, transparent fee.

How far in advance should I contact you?

8

Six to nine months before travel is ideal, and twelve for peak season (May - September), a wedding, or a large family group. We can work on shorter timelines but the earlier you reach out, the more of Italy is available to you. We have planned several trips for clients who reached out only 2-4 weeks before their trips, but accommodation is always extremely limited in these instances.

What is the best time to visit Italy?

9

May and September - October have the best balance of weather, open restaurants and manageable crowds. We advise to not visit in August as it is HOT, crowded, and a lot of places are shut for holidays. If you’re planning to visit Piemonte for truffles, the Dolomites for skiing, or some other time-specific trip, recommended times may differ.

What is Fatto a Mano Travel’s mission?

10

To use luxury travel to support the communities it depends upon, and to push back on the mass tourism that is hollowing out the places people come to see. Italy received more than 71 million foreign visitors in 2025. In the major art cities that shows up as housing costs residents can no longer afford and family workshops replaced by souvenir stands. Our trips are built the other way: no packages, no large groups, no cruise ships. When you direct your time and spending toward artisans, family restaurants, small towns and the business owners we have worked with for years, you help keep those traditions alive, and you get the real Italy in return.
